Why choose J W Football Coaching-Birmingham
After more than 20 years of working in primary-school PE and grassroots football, I wanted to create something that gave children in our community more opportunities to play, learn and feel that football was a place where they belonged. J W Football Coaching was built to provide children with meaningful time on the ball, individual attention and the freedom to develop without being afraid of making mistakes.
I have seen first-hand that every child’s journey is different. Some arrive full of confidence, while others need patience, encouragement and time before they feel comfortable joining in. Some want to take their first steps into football, some already play for a team and want additional coaching, and others simply need an environment where they can enjoy being active and make new friends. My responsibility is to recognise the child in front of me and help them move forward from their own starting point.
Our sessions are purposeful and energetic, but development is never measured solely by goals, results or how quickly a child progresses into a team. Confidence, resilience, decision-making, communication and enjoyment matter just as much. I want children to leave each session feeling that they have learned something, been noticed and are excited to return.
Today, J W Football Coaching supports children from their earliest experiences in Minis through weekly development sessions, private and small-group coaching, holiday programmes and pathways towards grassroots team football. I lead the programme, with trusted coaches engaged to assist with selected sessions while working to the same expectations around safety, behaviour, inclusion and player development.
One of the things I am particularly proud of is the pathway we have helped build for local children. Over a three-year period, J W Football Coaching has contributed to the formation of 18 teams for Maypole FC, giving many young players the opportunity to continue their journey within grassroots football. A team place is never automatic or guaranteed, but we work to prepare children properly and help them access suitable opportunities when they are ready.
Ultimately, I want J W Football Coaching to be more than somewhere a child attends for an hour each week. I want it to make a genuine contribution to our community - creating positive experiences, supporting families and helping children develop skills and confidence that extend beyond the football pitch. If a child leaves us happier, more confident and believing a little more in themselves, then the programme has achieved something meaningful.
